Department of Environmental Sciences and EcoClub (Green Warriors) of GDC Vijaypur organized a lecture on “Beating Plastic Pollution” under the guidance of worthy Principal of the college, Dr. Ashu Vashisht today on World Environment Day 2025. The event aimed to raise awareness among students, faculty, and the wider community about the urgent need to combat plastic pollution and promote sustainable practices. The highlight of the observance was a lecture delivered by Dr. Arti Sharma, Convener of Ecoclub and Head, Department of Environmental Sciences. She delivered an insightful and engaging presentation, highlighting the devastating impact of plastic waste on ecosystems, human health, and biodiversity. The speaker presented alarming statistics on global plastic production and waste generation, emphasizing the non-biodegradable nature of most plastics and their persistence in the environment for hundreds of years. She elucidated on the microplastic crisis, its entry into the food chain, and its potential long-term health implications. The lecture moved beyond the problems to offer practical solutions and actionable steps individuals can take to reduce their plastic footprint. These included adopting the "3 Rs" – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – advocating for policy changes, supporting eco-friendly alternatives, and participating in community clean-up drives. Principal of GDC Vijaypur, Dr. Ashu Vashisht underscored the significance of World Environment Day and the college's responsibility in instilling environmental consciousness. She stated that our planet faces unprecedented environmental challenges, and it is our collective duty to protect and preserve it for future generations. Events like these are crucial in sensitizing our youth to these critical issues and empowering them to become agents of change. The lecture was followed by an interactive Q&A session, where students actively engaged with the speaker, seeking clarifications and proposing innovative ideas for plastic waste management. The event concluded with a pledge taken by all attendees to consciously reduce their plastic consumption and advocate for a plastic-free environment. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Naseem Choudhary, Head, Department of English, who expressed gratitude to the speaker, the Principal, the faculty, and the enthusiastic participation of the students for making the World Environment Day observance a resounding success. Dr. Manoj Heer, Prof. Sonia Devi and Dr. Nain Singh graced the occasion.
