Govt. Degree College Vijaypur Celebrates World Suicide Prevention Day

Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in collaboration with NSS Unit of GDC Vijaypur celebrated World Suicide Prevention Day by organizing a lecture on the theme ‘changing the narrative’. The objective of celebrating this day was to spread awareness among the college students about preventing suicide, reducing stigma and helping people with bad mental health. Emphasis was also laid upon the importance of community support and early intervention in protecting lives with suicidal tendencies. NSS volunteers of the college participated in the lecture with curiosity, interest and attention. An awareness lecture was delivered by Prof. Ritu Bhagat (Convenor IQAC and HOD Education) where she raised awareness about reducing stigma and encouraging open conversations to prevent suicides among college students. She further stated changing the narrative on suicide is about transforming how we perceive this complex issue and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support. Principal of the college, Dr. (Prof.) Vandana Verma while speaking on the occasion stated that suicide has a number of complex and interrelated and underlying contributing factors like trauma, mental health conditions, depression, anxiety, sexual abuse and more can contribute to the feelings of pain and hopelessness. Having access to means to kill oneself – most typically firearms, medicines and poisons – is also a risk factor. Whole of the event was organized with the full support of the senior faculty members like Prof. Anita Jamwal (HOD Political Science), Prof. Mamta Gupta (HOD Commerce) and Dr. Anoop Kumar Bhagat (HOD Sociology). The event was coordinated by Prof. Ritu Bhagat (Convenor IQAC and HOD Education) and Dr. Naseem Chowdhary (HOD English & NSS PO) and co- coordinated by Prof. Poonam Kundan (HOD Environmental Sciences) Dr. Manoj Heer (HOD Dogri) and Prof. Meetu Sharma (HOD Geography).
